Is your high schooler dreaming of studying medicine? Yearning to practice human rights law? Or ready to delve into the human mind, brain and behaviour? Then the Canadian International School’s Cambridge Summer Programme might be just the place for them to take their college dreams for a spin!
This summer, Hong Kong teens at CDNIS can experience a slice of Cambridge University life, via a long-running, sophisticated summer learning programme for high school students. The 2022 programme runs from 25 to 29 July on Zoom. CDNIS has hosted this special instalment of summer learning for over a decade, and this marks the second year of its online iteration. With many returning lecturers, it’s set to be a seamless and fascinating week.
Topics galore – from artificial intelligence to medicine and sustainability
What sets this summer programme apart is the 24 topics on offer for students to explore. This is no ordinary academic line-up either; it’s jam-packed with modern, real-world discussions and the opportunity to delve deep into life’s big questions – like, what will actually happen when we run out of fossil fuels?
The learning courses of the CDNIS Cambridge Summer Programme cover five core areas:
#1 Social Sciences & Humanities, with topics including “The Philosophy & Ethics of Artificial Intelligence”
#2 Medicine, including “A Taste of Medicine”
#3 Mathematics, including “Algorithms”
#4 Law, including “Introduction to Human Rights Law”
#5 Engineering, Science and Technology, including “Engineering a Sustainable Future”

Study with accomplished Cambridge academics
“For over a decade, our students have delighted in being taught by Cambridge lecturers. The Summer Programme faculty are an incredible mix of young, dynamic academics and also established experts,” says Dove Noel, Activities Manager at CDNIS.
This year, the CDNIS Cambridge Summer Programme faculty includes Dr John Biggins, a lecturer of applied mechanics in Cambridge’s Department of Engineering; Dr Kirsty Hughes, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law specialising in human rights law and General Editor of the European Human Rights Law Review; and returning English lecturer and published author Dr Ewan James Jones, Director of Studies at Cambridge’s Downing College. And they are just a few among a long and esteemed list of lecturers!
Dr Jones says, “This will be my eighth year teaching at the CDNIS Summer Programme, and I have loved every minute! Each year, I am amazed by the ability and diversity of the students, and also their intellectual curiosity. The small class format allows us to work in a personalised and interactive setting, even during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.”
Fellow returnee Dr Biggins adds, “The magic of a Cambridge education comes from our emphasis on informal small group teaching, which allows students to discuss their work personally with world experts. The CDNIS summer school really captures the same magic. Over the week, we get to know the students, help them individually, and also interact with them just like Cambridge undergraduates.”
