Australian TESSA HARTNETT lives in Tanjung Pinang, a northern suburb of George Town in Penang. We find out what she likes about her neighbourhood, including her favourite restaurants, places to shop and details of her condo in Penang.
# An overview of your Penang neighbourhood
What’s the name of your street?
Lorong Seri Tanjung Pinang.
If it’s in another language, what does it mean?
“Lorong” means street or lane, and “Tanjung” translates to cape or headland, which perfectly captures this coastal spot’s scenic vibe!
What’s a common myth or misconception about your neighbourhood?
Believe it or not, I haven’t heard any wild myths yet! Maybe I should start one – something about secret treasure buried along the waterfront?
Exact words you tell a taxi driver to get home?
You’ll want to download Grab. Just pop in your exact address, and you’re good to go. It’s way cheaper than hiring drivers. Honestly, I’ve never even seen a taxi here, except at the airport!
How long have you lived here? Why here?
Two amazing years! Penang won us over with its slow, relaxed vibes, the colour in the sunsets and the food; it always comes back to the food.
# Out and about in Tanjung Pinang
When you walk out of your place, what’s the first thing you see?
If I step out my door, it’s my neighbour’s front door (hello, privacy!). But step outside the complex, and you’ll either see the waterfront on one side or townhouses and homes lining the streets on the other.
What’s the closest store to your front door?
Retail marina Straits Quay is our next-door neighbour, and the Korean Supermarket is the first shop you’ll stumble upon.
If your street was chosen for a remake of a film, which would it be?
Pleasantville! Everything looks idyllic here – quiet streets, waterfront views, and friendly vibes and the rows of townhouses look the same from above.
We’re sure your neighbours are great but is there anything you wouldn’t mind a little less of?
Honestly, it’s so peaceful here that I barely hear a peep from my neighbours.
What’s the unofficial uniform of your street?
Smart casual is the way to go! It’s humid, so people dress for comfort – loose-fitting clothes are a must. You’ll see plenty of breezy sundresses, shorts, and linen shirts.
What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen on your street?
A meerkat in a nappy! I’m still not sure if that was a pet or a gimmick, but it certainly made me look twice.
# The best things about living in Tanjung Pinang in Penang
What are your three favourite places to eat or drink in the neighbourhood?
- Oceano Symphony. Their espresso martinis are a must-try, and it overlooks a stunning beach. Catching the sunset here is nothing short of magical.
- Melbourne Cartel. The coffee here is top-notch. Plus, it’s right at Straits Quay, giving you that perfect marina view.
- La Chica. If you’re craving Mexican or fun, this place is buzzing with energy. It also overlooks the marina, serving up fantastic margaritas and a lively atmosphere.
Where are the best places to shop for basics?
For groceries, Sam’s is my go-to – small but it has a good variety of international options. If you’re looking for budget-friendly options, Lotus has a wide range of groceries and home appliances that won’t break the bank. I tend to look beyond the neighbourhood for fashion, but the supermarkets here have you covered for essentials!
What are some fun or interesting things to do in the neighbourhood?
Head down to the rocks near the fishing boats for a unique experience. Afterward, treat yourself to some chicken satay sticks from a friendly local gentleman – they come with the best peanut sauce in town! Add a glorious sunset into the mix, and it’s the perfect evening.
What’s one thing you’d never change?
The sunsets. Most evenings the sky is painted with colours that make me grab my phone, I must have hundreds of photos of the Penang sky. It’s a daily dose of natural beauty.
How about one thing you would change?
The humidity! Wouldn’t it be nice to have a switch for that?
If the city gives you a million dollars to soup up your Tanjung Pinang neighbourhood, how would you use it?
I’d launch a monthly night market along the waterfront! Think food trucks, local drinks, live music, and cosy tables by the sea. It would be the perfect way to bring the community together and showcase local talent.
# Exploring other parts of Penang
What are your favourite Penang spots for taking out-of-town guests?
George Town is a must! The street art and heritage sites give visitors a real sense of Penang’s rich culture.
When you’re in need of a dose of culture, where do you go?
George Town, hands down. It’s brimming with history, art, and local flavour.
If you’re missing home, what do you do?
We’ll have a family dinner on the beach up at Batu Ferringhi or grab a drink at Oceano Symphony, watching the waves and boats drift by. It’s a lovely reminder of how special our new “home away from home” really is.
