Meet the St Patrick’s Society President
TONY OCONE is an Italian-Scottish expat who has spent 13 years in Malaysia. Outside of Malaysia, he has a daughter, Mattia, 27, who works in finance, and a son, Enrico, 25, who works in the car industry – plus granddaughter Ariela who has just turned three. (“She’s my little lioness!” says Tony.) He’s also the President of the St Patrick’s Society of Selangor, which is turning 100 years old this year. He tells us about the society and its aims.
When and why was the St Patrick’s Society of Selangor set up?
The society was founded in June 1925, originally with the goal of organising St Patrick’s Day celebrations. Over the years, its role has evolved significantly. Today, the society is dedicated to bringing together the Irish community and those with Irish connections in Malaysia, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and cultural pride. Beyond just St Patrick’s Day, we now host a variety of social and cultural events throughout the year, celebrating Irish heritage and strengthening community ties.
Who are your members – are they a mix of nationalities?
While predominantly Irish, our members also encompass a wide range of nationalities including Malaysians. These are either those who have an affinity with Ireland through business or social, or those who have studied in Ireland.
Tell us more about the activities and events that the association puts on for members.
Our main event is the St Patrick’s Ball, a black-tie gala with live Irish music, dancing and fine dining. Throughout the year, we arrange social gatherings, networking events and pub nights. We also engage in charity work to support local causes.
Why should someone join the St Patrick’s Society?
Joining the St. Patrick’s Society of Selangor offers an opportunity to connect with a vibrant and welcoming community that celebrates Irish culture. Members enjoy access to social events including the aforementioned St Patrick’s Ball. It’s a great way to meet both Irish and non-Irish members who appreciate Irish traditions and camaraderie. We also organise local charity events, giving members a chance to contribute to meaningful causes. Whether you’re looking to expand your social circle, celebrate Irish heritage or simply have a great time, our society offers a welcoming and inclusive community for all.
How long is a membership period and what can a member expect during this time?
Membership is typically for a one-year period, during which members can enjoy a variety of social, cultural and networking events – there’s always something to look forward to! Members also can connect with a diverse and welcoming community while experiencing the rich heritage and hospitality of Irish culture.
The St Patrick’s Society of Selangor is celebrating its 100-year anniversary in Malaysia this year. Tell us a little bit about that and the event that has been planned to commemorate it.
We’re proud to celebrate our 100th anniversary, marking a century of Irish heritage, culture and community. To commemorate this milestone, we’ve planned a grand centennial celebration that will bring together members, friends and supporters for a day of festivities. The event will feature traditional Irish music, food and activities. It’s a remarkable milestone to celebrate our heritage, deepen our connections and embrace the future of our society in Malaysia.
