We talk to JASON TAN from Singapore about his Kuala Lumpur neighbourhood. Jason is a Chief Experience Officer; he lives in Sierramas, a residential area in Sungai Buloh that’s known for its greenery and family-friendly environment.
The Specifics
What’s the name of your street and home?
Sierramas Heights Condo on Jalan Sierramas Barat. Sierramas is the gated area.
What’s a common myth or misconception about your neighbourhood?
That it’s so far out that we might as well apply for a passport to get into the city. Reality? It’s a peaceful retreat with the convenience of city life just a short drive away. West Sierramas Road sounds stately, but really, it’s just the leafier side of town.
Exact words you tell a taxi driver to get home?
“Uncle, my place is at Sierramas, Sungei Buloh area.” Short, sharp, and with just enough clarity to avoid a scenic detour.
Closest subway, MRT, or LRT station?
Sungei Buloh (KTM) and Sungei Buloh (MRT). Not exactly walking distance, but hey, that’s what cars are for!
How long have you lived here? Why here?
Almost a year. The real VIP is my son, and this place is perfectly positioned for his school commute to IGB International School. Less time in traffic means more time for life. Being a gated community, security is also one of its main attractions. It’s a place to go if you’re looking for space and safety for your family.
The Scene
When you walk out of your place, what’s the first thing you see?
A tranquil, tree-lined road – Jalan Sierramas Barat. Across the way is Sierramas West, a serene gated community. No high-rise madness here!
What’s the closest store (of any type) to your front door?
Ra-ft Café/Bistro, Sierramas – where Filippo himself roasts the beans and serves up a mean cup of joe. It’s more than coffee; it’s a morning ritual.
If your street was chosen for a remake of a film, which would it be?
A locally adapted version of Castle Rock by Stephen King – because every great neighbourhood has its secrets, right?
We’re sure your neighbours are great, but is there anything you wouldn’t mind a little less of?
Fireworks. Love them during festive seasons; not so much when they go off at 3am like a surprise military exercise.
What’s the unofficial uniform of your street?
Athleisure. Whether they’re actually heading to the gym or just doing a stylish coffee run, no one’s judging.
What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen on your street?
Not exactly strange, but definitely unexpected: there’s a shortcut at the end of Jalan Sierramas Barat that connects to Jalan Hospital, Sungai Buloh. It’s a well-kept secret, frequented mostly by locals and motorbikes, making it a quick escape route during peak traffic. If you’re not from the area, you’d never guess it exists!
The Superlatives
What are your three favourite places to eat or drink in the neighbourhood?
- Ra-ft Café – Coffee roasted in-house and a breakfast menu that actually makes waking up worthwhile.
- Bichii Coffee –For the days you want a minimalist Japanese-style caffeine fix and a slice of zen.
- Edar Café – Where the locals go for hearty, unpretentious Malaysian fare. A great spot to satisfy those nasi lemak cravings.
What are the best places to shop at in the neighbourhood?
Jaya Grocer, Sierramas – because grocery shopping should feel convenient, not like a survival mission.
What are some fun or interesting things to do in the neighbourhood?
Check out the Weekend Community Market at Valencia, where you’ll find everything from organic produce to quirky artisanal crafts.
What’s one thing you’d never change?
The lush greenery. The trees here have been around longer than most of us, and they deserve to stay.
How about one thing you would change?
Pause the never-ending housing developments. Let’s keep some breathing room, please.
If the city gave you a million dollars to soup up your street, how would you use it?
I’d fantasise about paving a top-notch road from Jalan Sierramas Utama to Jalan Sierramas Barat. Nothing says luxury like a smooth ride home!
Beyond the ’Hood
What are your favourite Kuala Lumpur places for taking out-of-town guests?
- Majapahit, Arcoris Mont Kiara – A fusion of Southeast Asian flavours done right.
- Ole-Ole Bali, KL East Mall – For when you need a Bali fix without a plane ticket.
- KO Café, TTDI – A hidden gem with delicious Taiwanese fare and killer cocktails.
- Kapitan, TTDI – Because good naan and tandoori chicken never disappoints.
- Abang & Adik – Where history meets art with a touch of nostalgia.
- Kana Curry House – Because nothing says “Malaysian culture” like a banana leaf meal and crispy roti canai.
- Leaf on Bowl, Altivo Plaza – A cosy eatery specialises in Asian fusion rice and noodle bowls.
- Desa Parkcity – A mix of great food, pet-friendly cafes, and a scenic lakeside setting.
- Bamboo Hills – A trendy dining destination ideal for alfresco dining and catching up over good food.
When you’re in need of a dose of culture, where do you go?
Sunday Pasar Malam TTDI. This vibrant night market has everything from street food to handmade crafts. The mix of aromas, chatter, and sizzling grills is pure KL magic.
If you’re missing Singapore, what do you do?
Honestly, it’s rare because we feel at home in KL. But National Day celebrations at the Singapore High Commission always bring a wave of nostalgia. Nothing like a sea of red shirts, a familiar anthem and some chilli crab to hit the feels.
