Halloween costumes along Pottinger Street
You really can’t avoid that wild bit of Hong Kong’s old granite stairway, whether it’s Halloween or not. Here, revellers on the skint side can find wigs for around $100, feather boas from $15, masquerade accessories and masks from $12, and a huge range of plastic animal masks at $50. Awesome.

When the Facebook banner for a costume shop includes six women dressed as giant Crayola pencils and a man dressed as a glass of beer, you know your hunt for Halloween gold has been successful. Of course, you don’t have to visit a costume shop in Hong Kong to look the part for Halloween. You can make something yourself! If you think you’ve got the crafting chops to make a half-decent pirate suit or Disney princess, Head to Artland to source all the supplies you need. There’s fabric, paint, glitter, face paint and other arty bits and bobs galore.

Get in touch with the HKAPA to see if you might be able to hire a costume formerly used in a production. When they’ve offered the service in the past, prices have tended to range from $1,500 to $2000 for a period of seven days.

For dressing the smaller members of the family in a fairy or pirate outfit, or as a character from Frozen, Toys “R” Us tends to have a bunch of costumes, and plenty of fun accessories. You can search the online catalogue first to find what you like.

Halloween costumes at Wan Chai Market
When a market also goes by the moniker “Toy Street”, you know you’re going to find some decent dress-up stuff, and that’s definitely the case here. You might have to do a bit of hunting though! Keep in mind, too, that you’re quite likely to find similar cheap-and-cheerful costumes and Halloween paraphernalia (from plastic Dracula’s teeth to pumpkin-shaped trick-or-treat buckets) in lots of local stationery shops across HK.
