Is one of your new yearโs resolutions to give the bathroom a zhuzh? Whether it’s a new bath tub, a better shower mixer or complete retiling, read on! Interior designer JENNY PERRY shares six bathroom makeover projects she recently completed in Hong Kong.
Bathroom Makeover No. 1
For this master bathroom, we needed to fit a shower, double sink, bathtub and toilet all in the one space.
Itโs nice to have a feature wall โ for this one, we used a handmade clay tile. The floor has an Italian Chester tile with a border, and we added a wood-coloured cabinet for a warm feel. We also included a handmade sink and Corian countertop for softness.
Thereโs a niche in the wall behind the bathtub and one inside the shower; these are not only functional, but also neat and pretty. Thereโs also plenty of storage space elsewhere, including behind the mirror and lots of drawers in the basin cabinet.

All the hardware is the same colour: gun metal โ even the shower screen frames, towel rail and small hooks.
Some indirect lighting was added inside the cabinet and underneath the mirror cabinet for more mood-light options.
Aside from high-standard plumbing work concealed in the wall, we also installed a ventilator in the false ceiling for heating, venting and dehumidifying.
Bathroom Makeover No. 2
This smaller space features a combined bathtub and shower with a framed glass panel for a partition. The small square tile is handmade in Italy, with little dots sprayed into the design in different patterns and areas to give it a very natural look.
The floor tile is an unusually large 90cm square tile; the bathroom is very long and thin, and the squareshaped tile makes the space look wider.
There is lighting in the niche and inside the shelf, as well as underneath the cabinet. Every light can be turned on and off from a different switch.
Bathroom Makeover No. 3
To make this typical bathroom design โ shower, toilet and sink โ more interesting, we used a โjellybeanโ mosaic to tile the whole space.
The mirror was sourced from an old boat and upcycled. A stone countertop covers three sides of the cabinet, with a natural wood tone for the cupboards at the front.
The shower set is the concealed style in the same gunmetal colour as all the accessories, and a ventilation system is built into a false ceiling above.
The built-in niche for the shower area is neat and useful, while indirect LED light underneath the cabinet can be left on at night.
Bathroom Makeover No. 4
This is a small bathroom with everything in one space, including a sink, a concealed-style toilet, a bathtub and a shower.
The countertop and bathtub edge is made of Corian. We tailor-made it to the clientโs design and rounded the edge for safety.
All the shower mixers (i.e., hot/cold controls), taps, hooks and rails are a brushed brass colour. The plumbing was concealed in the wall at the right height and location before the tiling work was done.
The feature wall has handmade clay tiles, with no-slip tiles on the floor.
Indirect light comes from the side of the cabinet, so it wonโt shine directly at anyone entering at night. Thereโs also a light underneath the basin cabinet.
A ventilator was installed above the window to avoid dropping the ceiling to add it above. The toilet tank is built into the wall to enhance the clean look.
Bathroom Makeover No. 5
This large bathroom features a curved shower area, a handmade stone bathtub, a double sink, and a big horizontal lit-up mirror.
The small circle stone mosaic in the curved shower area combines well with the grey no-slip tiles. The countertop is Corian with a marbled design to match the mosaics on the wall.
Thereโs a built-in horizontal niche that matches the horizontal mirror, with big drawers underneath the sink, and a shelf in the middle for towels. A ventilation system is boxed into the ceiling for a clean finish.
The white wooden blinds also match the tiles and floor, while the shower and bathtub mixers are in the same style to enhance the clean design.
Bathroom Makeover No. 6
In this bathroom for older clients, thereโs a bench inside the shower area for sitting down, and also a long strong handle to assist with getting up.
The flooring is flat and level from the outside to the inside of the shower, and thereโs a heated towel rail and a smart toilet with built-in bidet. Under the sink are two big storage drawers.
Along with indirect lighting inside the niche and underneath the cabinet, you can activate the light-up mirrors, which provide white light, warm light and super white light options.
All the fixtures and accessories are in the same colour โ gunmetal. The tiles are Italian designed and made, in a natural colour and pattern.
