Thinking about getting started with trading? Or perhaps you already know the fundamentals but have questions about how AI is affecting the trading industry. Here, we chat with PAUL BRATBY, the founder of xBrat, who has developed a global AI trading methodology – plus, find out all the details of a live workshop he’s hosting in Hong Kong in November.
Tell us a bit about yourself. How did a former British Army apprentice end up in trading? Are there any lessons that can be transferred from a military environment to trading?
My journey began as a 17-year-old apprentice in the British Army, where I learned discipline, structure and the importance of staying focused under pressure. Those early experiences shaped the way I approach every challenge today.
As my career progressed, I became fascinated by human behaviour – particularly how psychology influences decision-making. That curiosity naturally led me to financial markets, where emotions, patterns and behaviour play out every day. Over the last two decades, I’ve dedicated myself to understanding those patterns and building a methodology that turns complex market behaviour into a structured, repeatable process that traders can actually use.
Trading and military environments have more in common than many people realise. Both require clear decision-making, risk management and emotional control. Markets can trigger fear and greed very quickly, but reacting emotionally is rarely productive. The Army taught me to stay calm, trust the plan and execute with consistency. Those principles remain at the core of everything I teach today.
When and why did you launch xBrat?
I saw too many traders struggling with information overload. There was no shortage of indicators, opinions or strategies, but very little focus on creating clarity.
My goal was to simplify trading by providing tools, education and a methodology that help people make better decisions with confidence. Since 2013, we’ve been focused on transforming complex trading concepts into practical, visual systems that allow traders to identify opportunities with greater structure and consistency.
What services does xBrat provide?
We offer a combination of technology, education and trader support.
Our ecosystem includes the xBrat Suite of confluence-based trading indicators, Stocks Predator for scanning stocks and ETFs, and xBratAI, which delivers real-time market analysis across crypto, forex, stocks and futures.
Alongside the software, we provide comprehensive training through the xBrat Academy, live trading education, mentorship programmes and an active trading community. The objective is simple: help traders develop confidence, consistency and a repeatable edge.
Has technology made trading easier or more complicated?
In many ways, both. Technology has democratised trading. Today, individual traders have access to sophisticated charting platforms, scanners, automation tools and real-time market data that were once only available to institutions.
However, greater access has also created more noise. Traders often find themselves overwhelmed by indicators, opinions and endless streams of information. The real advantage doesn’t come from having more technology – it comes from having the right technology and using it within a clear framework. Good tools should simplify decision-making, not complicate it.
How is AI changing the trading landscape, and what role will it play in the future?
AI is already transforming how traders analyse markets. It can process vast amounts of information, identify patterns and highlight opportunities far faster than any individual could manually.
Looking ahead, I expect AI to become an increasingly powerful tool for filtering noise, refining trade execution and helping traders adapt to changing market conditions more efficiently.
That said, I don’t believe AI will replace successful traders. Discipline, judgment and risk management remain uniquely human skills. The future is not about AI replacing traders – it’s about traders using AI intelligently within a proven framework.
Which markets interest you most, and why?
I’m particularly drawn to futures, forex, crypto and stocks because they offer clear examples of how structure, volatility and trader behaviour interact.
What fascinates me most isn’t necessarily the asset itself but the way price responds around key levels, how sentiment shifts and how patterns repeat over time. Markets that reward discipline, structure and repeatability are where traders can develop a genuine long-term edge.
What’s the best piece of advice you’d give someone starting out in trading?
Treat trading like a business, not a gamble.
Most beginners focus on finding the perfect trade, but the real foundation of success is risk management and consistency. Your first objective shouldn’t be making money – it should be protecting capital while developing good habits.
Learn a structured methodology, focus on process over outcomes and avoid chasing every market move. Successful traders aren’t right all the time; they’re simply disciplined enough to follow a repeatable process over the long term.
Finally, what do you enjoy doing when you’re not watching the markets?
Family comes first. I enjoy spending time with my wife, Dee, and my grandchildren, and I split my time between Dubai, Hong Kong and Europe.
Outside trading, I enjoy writing, teaching and continuing to develop tools and strategies that help traders improve their performance. One of the most rewarding aspects of what I do is helping people simplify trading, build confidence and approach the markets with greater clarity and discipline.
