When NADEEM BUTT founded CarpetBuyer in 2003, his family had already been in the carpet business for four decades – so it’s fair to say he knows a thing or two about carpets, both classic and contemporary. We get his tips on a range of rugs and carpets in Hong Kong.
5 things to consider when buying carpets or rugs
If you’re buying a carpet in Hong Kong, Nadeem suggests keeping these things at the top of your mind:
#1 Fibres
The material the carpet is made of is an essential factor that will affect its durability, texture and resistance to wear and tear.
#2 Climate
The humidity in HK can affect certain materials, so opt for carpets that can resist mould and mildew.
#3 Foot traffic
Choose a durable material if you intend on placing the carpet in a high-traffic area.
#4 Maintenance
Consider how easy it will be to clean and maintain the carpet, especially with pets or children in the home.
#5 Style and colour
Think about how your carpet will fit with your existing décor and whether you want it to be a statement piece or blend in with the surroundings.
Popular fabrics and styles in 2025
Nadeem says, “Although we consider wool to be the best material owing to its strength, durability and natural stain resistance, there are other fabrics that people are drawn to when buying carpets.”
He adds that bamboo silk is the most popular fabric in the market currently; it’s often referred to as being the alternative to a silk rug, as it resembles silk and has a similar feel. Bamboo is also a natural product and a far more sustainable fabric than silk. It has other advantages, too: it repels bugs and dust mites and has non-allergic properties and zero shedding, making it perfect for people with sensitive skin.
Polyester is a synthetic option that is highly resilient and easy to clean, says Nadeem.
As for styles: “Contemporary geometric patterns and traditional Persian designs are both trending, appealing to a wide range of tastes. Also popular when it comes to rugs in Hong Kong at the moment are retro and vintage styles in warm tones.”
Tips on cleaning and care for carpets
To ensure your carpet lasts a long time, Nadeem suggests following these care tips:
#1 Regular vacuuming
Vacuum at least once a week to remove dirt and prevent it from settling into the fibres.
#2 Immediate stain treatment
Treat spills promptly with a clean cloth and mild detergent mixed with water to prevent stains from setting.
#3 Professional cleaning
Consider getting your carpets professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months to maintain their appearance and longevity. CarpetBuyer offers a cleaning and repair service.
#4 Rotation
Rotate your carpets periodically to ensure even wear, especially in high-traffic areas.
What you’ll find at CarpetBuyer
We aksed Nadeem what shoppers can expect from his store.
“At CarpetBuyer we offer a vast selection of carpets sourced from around the world, showcasing a variety of styles, materials and textures, and with an emphasis on quality and craftsmanship. Our collection includes luxurious Persian rugs known for their intricate designs in durable wools, and silk carpets from Iran. We also stock vibrant contemporary pieces from India, Pakistan, Turkey and Afghanistan and eco friendly options made from sustainable bamboo silk materials.
“Our contemporary rugs come in a wide variety of styles, from ‘soft’ designs that feature gentle patterns and colours, to ‘hard’ designs that are bolder and more dramatic. These rugs embrace minimalism, abstract patterns and neutral tones, making them perfect for modern spaces. One of the great things about contemporary rugs is that they tend to be more Western in their design. This makes them a perfect fit for today’s homes.
“Our traditional rugs in Hong Kong, on the other hand, are hand-knotted in wool or silk or a combination of both materials, and using vegetable dyes. They’re rich in history and feature intricate designs and patterns, floral motifs, medallions and borders. They typically have a rich colour palette with deep reds, blues and earth tones that add timeless elegance to any room.”
The benefits of buying rugs or carpets in Hong Kong
Nadeem touches on some of the reasons why investing in a modern rug or classic carpet is a good idea:
#1 Aesthetic appeal
Both options – classic and contemporary – can dramatically enhance the visual appeal of your space, adding warmth and character.
#2 Comfort
Carpets provide a cosy feel underfoot, making rooms more inviting for everyone.
#3 Acoustic properties
Carpets help to absorb sound, creating a quieter, more peaceful environment.
#4 Value add
Quality carpets can increase the overall value of your home, making them a wise investment. Choosing the right carpet not only elevates your interior design but also contributes to a more comfortable and enjoyable living space.
