Australian International School Hong Kong
A family’s perspective
The Hardings from Australia are a long-term AISHK family.
“We moved to Hong Kong from Sydney nine years ago, and our three children all started at AISHK. After six years at the school, our two sons went back to Australia to go to boarding school. However, with the COVID-19 situation, we found that boarding didn’t work so well for our family. Online learning creates a separation between children and their friends; the social interaction that the classroom and playground environment provides is so important, so it was a struggle for our boys to be deprived of this for so long. We were fortunate enough to be able to re-enrol them at AISHK.
Our family’s time at AISHK has been all-embracing. The school is able to engage students in anything they may wish to pursue; our eldest was able to go on debating trips, our middle child played rugby, and our youngest played netball and took up art.
What sets AISHK apart is that it is truly an international school; giving its students an international experience while still maintaining a sense of Australianness. This strong connection to Australia is what made the school the clearest option for our children’s education.”

Discovery Bay International School

“The holistic and personalised approach to learning within Early Years attracted us to DBIS; the outdoor play areas and the creative classrooms, coupled with the relatively small class sizes, were also a big draw for us. My eldest has flourished in his learning since Nursery.
The school’s online learning enabled the kids to access learning throughout the school closure days, with more structure for the older children, with both online and offline activities. The dedication by the teachers during this time meant that both the students and parents had great accessibility to the required materials.
The facilities and educational standards are outstanding, yet it has maintained its community feel, and provides opportunities for families to be involved in the school’s development. There are many opportunities for the parents to interact with the teaching staff, senior leadership and one another.”

German Swiss International School (GSIS)
A teacher’s perspective
German expat Udo Krebs teaches Mathematics in K07, 08 and 09 at GSIS, as well as Content and Language Integrated Learning in subjects like Mathematics and Sciences (DFU).
I joined GSIS in August 2022, and what’s refreshing is the high level of commitment and motivation amongst our students and colleagues. As teachers, we have a duty to develop global and critical-thinking citizens. The German International Stream does just that where our students learn to take responsibility for the success of their own education and make their mark in society. Open to non-native German speaking students, they are taught a well-rounded education in both German and English where they become bilingual and receive the worldwide highly recognised German International Abitur diploma (DIA) – one that leads to academic excellence. A DIA graduate can freely continue their studies and be accepted with an education resident visa at any prestigious university in Germany, or anywhere else in the world including the rest of Europe, UK, Canada, and the United States.
I also thoroughly appreciate the diversity and school activities between the German International Stream and English International Steam, along with the rest of the GSIS community. For example, a non-German speaking secondary student from the school recently took part in the German ‘Mathe-Olympiade’ (Maths Olympics), assemblies are prepared and led by students in both streams, a variety of concerts and our popular Christmas Bazaar are highlights for everyone to enjoy.

The Callander family are a British / Malaysian family with 3 children at HKA.
HKA has proven to be the dream school for our 3 kids. They are each very different in their learning styles, personalities and interests but are thriving academically and socially, and totally enjoying their schooling experience. The curriculum is structured with a strong emphasis on development of the whole student and community support.
Our kids are being taught how to shine and embrace their struggles, be accepting of others and be open minded. It’s heartwarming to observe them daily, listen to them share anecdotes from school and see their excitement in going to school – that’s when you know you’ve chosen the right school for your children, when they are being fulfilled holistically at all levels.
We are now into our 7th year at HKA and are immensely proud to call ourselves an HKA family! The school has evolved so much and is continuously striving for excellence. “While Invictus is a relatively new international school in Hong Kong, it’s a recognised name in Southeast Asia. We’ve been impressed by the passion and determination of the new leadership of Invictus; they strive for excellence in every aspect while providing a warm, friendly and caring environment for children to develop their potential to the highest standards. The British curriculum strikes an appropriate balance between academic excellence and personal growth. Ethan enjoys science the most at Invictus. It’s an activity-oriented class involving hands-on experiences that enable students to engage in real-life illustrations and observations. It’s a sweet family moment listening to him share how interesting and exciting his science class has been. One night, he excitedly told us that his class had been introduced to a new ‘assistant teacher’, Mr Mandible – namely, a skeleton! The class was astonished at first but then they curiously (and nicely) examined their new assistant. Since then, Ethan has looked forward to science class and meeting Mr Mandible again! Through his smiles and laughs, we know he is enjoying school every day and that Invictus is the right school for him.”

“Al and I chose Kellett for its nurturing, inclusive environment, British curriculum and small class sizes. I went to the school myself and, in my humble opinion, there is nowhere better in HK.
Our children love Kellett for a variety of reasons: from the school musical, to the Sky Pitch to the chocolate chewy bars in the cafeteria! They all enjoy feeling part of a supportive extended family, and the overarching sense of fun and adventure.

“Malvern’s world-class facilities have certainly been a pull factor for us, and we also like how the school supports exceptional pupils through scholarships. However, what makes this school really special is the teaching staff’s strong commitment to further each individual pupil. The House tutor system works very well for keeping track of pupils’ academic and social-emotional development. Our children’s tutor never hesitates to proactively approach us to discuss how we can fulfil our children’s potential.
Our children speak with respect and admiration of their teachers. While success is celebrated, there is still room to make mistakes, and the school is very good at handling these “learning moments”. Therefore, our children have developed the courage and resilience to go beyond what they think is comfortable.
While setting a strong academic foundation, the school goes way beyond academic rigour. There is an extensive after-school programme in place, including even specialised programmes like venturing into law. This is very demanding and offers pupils a lot more than the standard package.”

First drawn to the school through its association with one the most well established co-educational independent schools in the UK and its incredible facilities, we have been extraordinarily well supported by the commitment of staff throughout the school. While our daughter started life here in Reception, our son has made a steady journey towards the end of Key Stage 2. Both children thoroughly enjoy their time at school – they are engaged and learn new things. A wider commitment to performing arts has helped them to build confidence and a deep appreciation for music.
School selection for our son Brendan was handled with particular care. “I enjoy the sense of community we have at Stamford. The opportunity to collaborate with students, fellow teachers and parents is something special – we can learn so much from each other. Since opening, we’ve always looked to create experiences where we can connect, work together and share, and I believe this culture of community has helped us through “COVID times”.
Our whole school events, such as Mission Inspire and Sustainable Stamford, are the essence of this collaboration. Teachers, students and parents come together, learning a common theme, be it coding, recycling or the environment. Everybody has a unique experience, which we can share and learn from each other.

“Our daughters were both born in Hong Kong, but sadly we had to leave in 2020 due to the pandemic. In 2023, we had the chance to come back and we decided to live in Hong Kong Island to have a new experience and a different lifestyle after living in Lantau Island before. I was doing some online research when I found YCA, which was just three minutes away from our place. One day while walking around the neighbourhood, we saw the building and just walked in, where we were promptly welcomed.
The girls’ first day of school was remarkable – they were so happy and excited about everything! All the worries that could ever hit us disappeared when we picked them up and started to listen to them sharing stories of their day. Our kids are very confident about the progress that they have made, despite the fact that in their previous school, English was not the mainstream language. Additionally, they have built relationships that have helped them to settle down during the adaptation period after this big move.
YCA is not only a school. It’s a community filled with people committed to help kids to fully develop all their skills (not only academically speaking). Learning is meaningful and fun at the same time. The staff spark joy, care and passion for their job. The school makes sure that parents are always involved in the activities and that we are aware about everything that happens through a very clear and good communication. A teacher’s perspective
British expat Matthew Haslam has spent 12 years in Hong Kong, and has taught at Wycombe Abbey for four years as an Upper Primary and KS3 English and Humanities specialist.
“Our school places great emphasis on the student experience. We have effective class sizes, with each class having its own dedicated Teaching Assistant. This way, all students receive a lot of contact time with teachers and adults to support their learning and development. I have seen first-hand many different examples of how quiet, sometimes shy, pupils join our school and turn into confident, inquisitive and enthusiastic young learners through the support we offer. As an educator, it’s a joy to work in a school in which this happens so frequently. You really feel you are making a positive difference in young people’s lives.
One especially memorable moment I treasure was in a ‘circle time’ activity last year. My class, our Teaching Assistant and I were taking it in turns to reflect on our first term of the year. I asked students to say something they had noticed a classmate had done well. They took turns to praise their peers with accolades such as “He has improved his spellings” or “She helped me when I did not understand a maths problem”, when one student praised the Teaching Assistant and myself, saying that they were really happy in our class. They said that the teachers help solve their problems and support them on a daily basis, which made that student very happy. It was very touching to hear, especially as we were not the intended subject of the activity! It is times like this that remind us why we became teachers and enjoy our teaching roles so much.”
